World Literacy Day
According to UNESCO, International Literacy Day (ILD) celebrations have taken place since 1967 annually around the World to remind the public of the importance of Literacy. As this year’s ILD theme states, “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces”, the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation through Otumfuo Community Reading Challenge (OCRC) initiative has contributed to improving literacy learning. Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist with 771 million illiterate people around the World, most of whom are women, who still lack basic reading and writing skills. To ensure no one is left behind, OCRC has contributed to a transformation in the existing learning space through literacy learning. OCRC has ensured quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all.
Otumfuo Community Reading Challenge is primarily initiated by the Foundation to promote Twi & English Reading among Junior High School Students, thus promoting literacy learning.
